  • 1 pound Ground Beef can substitute with ground lamb or pork
  • 1 medium Onion finely chopped
  • 1 cup Rice long-grain white rice, par-cook brown rice for even cooking
  • 1 cup Tomato Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Oregano can substitute with thyme or marjoram
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Pepper
For the Crust
  • 10 sheets Phyllo Dough brush with butter or oil between layers
  • 1/2 cup Butter or Oil for brushing
For Garnish
  • to taste Fresh Parsley or Dill for topping
  • 1 few Lemon Wedges optional for serving

Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a splash of oil. Sauté the finely chopped onion for about 5-7 minutes until translucent.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook for 8-10 minutes until browned.
  3. Incorporate rice, tomato sauce, oregano, salt, pepper, and a splash of water; simmer for 10 minutes until well combined.
  4. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Brush a baking dish with melted butter or oil.
  5. Layer five sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each sheet with butter.
  6. Distribute the meat and rice filling evenly over the phyllo layer.
  7. Place the remaining five sheets of phyllo on top, brushing each with butter.
  8. Tuck the edges of phyllo down neatly into the dish sides.
  9. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden and crisp. Cool for 10 minutes before slicing.
