Ingredients

For the Burger Patty
  • 1 pound Ground Beef Choose fresh, high-quality beef for the juiciest burgers.
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt Essential for enhancing the beef’s natural flavor.
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black Pepper Provides just the right mild heat for balance.
  • 0.5 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce Adds rich depth to the meat; soy sauce works too.
  • 2 teaspoons Mustard Offers a tangy kick; feel free to swap with Dijon.
For the Toppings
  • 1 cup Onions Sliced thin, caramelizes beautifully to bring sweetness.
  • 1 cup Mushrooms Sliced, brings an earthy umami flavor.
  • 1 clove Garlic Minced, intensifies overall flavor.
For the Assembly
  • 4 pieces Hamburger Buns These serve as the foundation; brioche or whole wheat offer tasty variations.
  • 4 slices Sharp Cheddar Cheese Imparts a strong, tangy bite.
  • 3 tablespoons Butter Used for toasting the buns.
  • 0.25 cup Mayo For a creamy texture.
Optional Extras
  • 2 tablespoons Mustard Additional layer of flavor.

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Grill

Method

Cooking Steps
  1. In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and onions, then pour in the Worcestershire sauce and red wine vinegar. Cook covered for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions soften and turn golden.
  2. Once the onions and mushrooms are caramelized, add the minced garlic. Sauté for an additional 5 minutes until fragrant and softened.
  3. Form four hamburger patties from the ground beef, ensure each patty is roughly ¾ inch thick and season both sides with salt and black pepper. Rub Worcestershire sauce and mustard on each patty.
  4. Set your grill or a skillet to medium-high heat, preheating for a few minutes until hot.
  5. Place the patties on the surface and cook without moving for about 5 minutes. Flip and cook for an additional 3 minutes, then add cheddar cheese on top and cover to melt.
  6. Spread the remaining butter on the insides of the buns and toast until golden brown.
  7. Assemble your burgers by spreading mayo and mustard on buns, adding the cheesy patty, and topping with caramelized onions and mushrooms.
