- Thinly slice 4 large yellow onions and set aside.
- Melt 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add sliced onions, salt, and sugar; cook over medium-low heat for about 40 minutes until golden brown.
- Pour in 6 cups of beef broth and 1 cup of dry white wine, add thyme and bay leaf, and bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat to low, simmer for 30 minutes, and season with black pepper to taste.
- Slice a baguette, toast until golden, and set aside for topping.
