Ingredients

For the Casserole
  • 8 slices Bacon Adds crispy, smoky flavor; consider thick-cut for added texture.
  • 1 medium Yellow onion Provides sweetness and depth; sweet onion or shallots can be used as a substitute.
  • 8 ounces Chopped button mushrooms Enhance umami flavor; baby bella mushrooms work as a tasty alternative.
  • 2 cloves Garlic (minced) Adds aromatic flavor; opt for fresh garlic over pre-minced jarred options.
  • 10.5 ounces Cream of mushroom soup Acts as the creamy base for the casserole.
  • 0.5 cups Milk Enriches the dish; whole milk is recommended.
  • 2 cups Monterey Jack cheese Offers creaminess and melts beautifully.
  • 4 cans Canned cut green beans Essential for classic texture; or use 2 pounds of fresh blanched beans.
  • 1 cups French fried onions Topping for added crunch; classic brands like French's are preferred.
Optional Variations
  • Cream of chicken or cream of celery soup Can be used instead of cream of mushroom.
  • Vegetarian option Replace bacon with liquid smoke.
  • Fresh herbs Add thyme or rosemary for a fragrant twist.
